On Highway 80 about an hour and a half east of Dallas is the oldest continuously operating movie house in Texas. Located in the quaint town of Mineola, the Select Theater has represented a fascinating conflation of East Texas entertainment, culture, and history since 1920.
Designated a Texas State Historical Landmark in 1998, the Select Theater also is home to the Lake Country Playhouse. Besides showing movies every weekend, the venue stages live theater performances several times a year. In addition, the Lake Country Orchestra performs occasional Sunday matinees. And in recent years, the theater has even been home to several “opries,” which helped produce at least one local singing sensation: Kacey Musgraves.
The Select Theater was featured prominently in an interesting documentary film called The Pride of Mineola, which was released in 2013. The documentary was directed by Mark Eversole, a retired California film maker. It captures the theater’s history and includes testimony from a variety of moviegoers from multiple generations.
